Lifelong Learning: More Than Just a Job Requirement
So many people just assume learning ends after high school or college. Once you get that diploma, you’re in the clear and never have to study again, right?... WRONG! I’m sure you realized soon after your formal education that even your fast food jobs have trainings where you may be tested.
But what I’m talking about here (continued learning as an adult), is about choosing to grow beyond your career. It’s learning for you, not just your job. It’s how we evolve as individuals and collectively. And without personal growth, you’re only holding yourself back.
Why Continuing Education Is Important
Yes, schools and workplaces may offer great courses and trainings. But learning doesn’t end there. When you choose to learn outside of those required systems, you grow emotionally, spiritually, socially, and mentally. It keeps your mind active, your curiosity alive and your life fuller. Knowledge is power because it gives YOU power over your own life.
How Limiting Beliefs Get In The Way
As adults, we start to believe we “can’t” or “don’t need to” learn anymore, unless it’s required by our profession. However, these beliefs are often unconscious and shaped by past experiences.
Maybe you haven’t found a topic that lights you up yet. Or maybe learning has always felt like a chore, not a benefit. But once you figure out HOW you want to grow and what truly interests you, gaining new knowledge becomes exciting. It builds confidence and helps you move forward in much bigger ways.
Different Forms of Continued Education
Something I have learned from being a professional artist: You can learn anywhere and in ANY way that works for you. Some examples are:
-
Spiritual/Personal Growth: Learn about your own beliefs, or explore others. Study rituals, philosophy, mindfulness, or practices that help you feel more grounded and intentional.
-
Communication + Self-Awareness: Learn how to be a better listener, friend, partner, or leader.
-
Surround Yourself with Learners: Join communities, listen to conversations, and absorb what others share.
-
Online Learning:
-
CE Shop (for real estate professionals)
-
YouTube (free, visual, varied styles)
-
Udemy or Skillshare (Structured and topic-specific)
-
Free or paid industry specific courses
-
-
Using AI to Learn Deeper:
-
Ask clarifying questions from confusing material. Ask to summarize what you’ve read or learned by first explaining it yourself. This can help a lot with retention when you explain what you just learned and then dive a little deeper. One of the best ways to use AI while learning is by breaking down complex topics into something that just clicks.
-
-
Books: Yes, books still matter! But remember, even books can contain bias or outdated information. Cross-check when needed as with any resource. Just because something’s printed doesn’t mean it’s 100% facts.
-
Everyday Learning Moments: Podcasts while doing chores, videos while waiting on food, audiobooks on car rides. Learning can be flexible and woven into your every day life!
Some of the Ways I Learn
-
Books – I have a mix, from fantasy, to self help, and spiritual books. If I had the space and budget, I’d turn a whole wall into a personal library!
-
Online trainings – Through YouTube, eXp University, Udemy, and other online webinars and trainings that I discover.
-
Real Life Trial and Error – Sometimes the best way to learn is to prepare... then just do it! And improve every time after.
-
AI tools - When I hit a wall, I ask questions to better understand. (Always keep in mind sometimes the information could be incorrect so also good to cross-check)
-
Other Agents – I love being around professionals who are also growth minded and open to sharing what they know too. That exchange of ideas is very valuable.
Everyone Learns Differently – Find What Works for You
Visual, auditory, verbal, hands on (or a mixture of some). There’s no “right” way.
Be open to shifting your learning methods depending on the season you’re in or the topic you’re exploring. You might thrive with visuals and hands on practice for a subject like art, but need a combination of visuals and audio for something like real estate law. A little tip, doodling what you’re learning or reading out loud might help to make it click better.
And remember: It’s okay if your learning style doesn’t match anyone else’s.
The Cost of Avoiding Personal Growth
If you only learn what you’re told to learn and nothing else, you’re limiting your full potential. True growth doesn’t come from pressure. It comes from curiosity. From seeing people living the way you want to, and asking yourself what they’ve learned to get there.
You weren’t made to just exist. You are meant to expand. You don’t have to learn everything, just the things that help you become more of who you want to be.
My Final Thoughts On This
Continued educations isn’t about being “perfect” or “knowing it all”. It’s about staying curious, capable, and open to growth.
Growth is simple... but it’s not always easy or comfortable. But it’s always worth it. The more you learn, the more power, peace and purpose you gain.
